Mocs Add Four State Champions To 2009-2010 Class by B.B. Branton posted November 18, 2008
Four state champions, including Logan Biddy (Bradley Central) and Jake Young (Ooltewah), have signed scholarship papers to wrestle for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and coach Chris Bono for the
2009-2010 school year.
Biddy won a Tennessee state title at 119 in 2008, while Alex Hudson at Sprayberry High School (Marietta, Ga.) claimed his second state championship (125) in AAAAA as a junior.
Texas native Jeremy Sandoval is a three-time defending state champ from Colleyville (Texas) Heritage High School and is the younger brother of current Moc wrestler Josh Sandoval.
These three join Young, a 2007 state champ, who signed with the Mocs last week.
"This is a solid, talented group of wrestlers that we have signed for next year,'' said Bono. "We look forward to
having them in the room next season and we know they will add a lot to the team.''
Logan Biddy
Sr., Bradley Central H.S (Tenn.)
Age: 17
Team co-captain
Plans to wrestle at 119 for
the third straight season
Career Record: 128-10
2008: 40-3
2008 Tennessee Division I champion at 119
3rd place at in 2007 at 119
Will join former Bradley wrestler and two-time state champ Dean Pavlou
in the Mocs wrestling room.
"I chose UTC over a couple of other schools due to the great coaching staff and also that (former Bradley
wrestler) Dean Pavlou is on the team,'' said Biddy. "I believe that the UTC coaches can help me be a success at the next level.''
''I don't have enough good adjectives to describe what Logan means to our team,'' said Bradley Central coach Steve Logsdon. "Logan works hard in the wrestling room and in the classroom.''
Alex Hudson
Sr., Sprayberry High School (Ga.)
Team co-captain as a junior and senior
Two-time Ga. AAAAA state champ
Career Record: 148-7
2008 state champion at 125 (52-1)
2007 state champ at
112 (48-1)
3rd as a sophomore (48-5)
First two-time state champ in Sprayberry history
Co-holder of school record for wins in a season (52)
"I chose UTC due to the proximity to Atlanta (two hours away), the good coaching staff and the tough guys in
the wrestling room,'' said Hudson. "Knowing that I will have strong competition in the practice room really sold it for me.''
''Alex is by far the best wrestler in Sprayberry history,'' said Sprayberry coach Gary Dehaven. "He is very good
at all three positions (top, bottom and on his feet). Alex is exceptional on his feet, dominant on top and very good on bottom.
"I think he should do very well at the next level due to the fact that he can get off bottom, which is crucial for success in college, Dehaven stated. ''Alex really doesn't have a weakness at the high school level.''
Jeremy Sandoval
Sr., Colleyville (Texas) Heritage H.S.
Age: 18
Plans to wrestle 135-140 this season
Three-time state champion
career record: 38-1
Only high school loss came as a ninth grader
34-0
as a junior
Colleyville Heritage's only three-time state champ
Hopes to become the first, four-time Texas UIL (University Interscholastic League) state champion
Two-time Cadet All-American
His brother Josh is
a UTC freshman and was a two-time Texas state runner-up.
"Probably the biggest factor for me in choosing UTC is that my older brother, Josh, is on the team,'' said Jeremy.
"He is a good workout partner and has always been there for me.''
''As good as Jeremy is in high school, I believe he will be a much better wrestler in college,'' said Colleyville
Heritage coach David Traver. "No one in high school has been able to ride him and to have the ability to get off bottom is a big key to success in at the next level. Jeremy thrives on high pressure matches.''
Jake Young
Sr., Ooltewah H.S. (Tenn.)
Team captain
Will wrestle at 171 for the third straight year
Career Record: 123-4
2008: 45-2
2007 Tennessee Division I state champion
State runner-up as a
freshman
Two-time Region champ
OW of the Ooltewah Invitational as a junior
Has recovered from shoulder injury that knocked him out of the 2008 state tournament.
"Jake is in top form and is really working hard,'' said Ooltewah coach Wendell Weathers. "He is hitting on all cylinders in practice and in excellent shape.''
